Jazz Talmud + Ayn Sof Arkestra

September 13, 2010 Leave a comment

This is THE big project I’ve been working on… finally here!

On Sep 27th @ the Cell Theater: Frank London, Greg Wall and myself will perform my Jazz Talmud poems, imitating talmudic modes dialogue, argument, orality. Frank and Greg – two horn players – will be acting as Rashi and Tosefot, two commentators fighting and harmonizing over the text.

And then! Ayn Sof Arkestra, 15-piece klezmer band will play a set.

Should be totally wild. More info is here.

Going outta town for much dreamed-of and drooled-over California vacation!!

While there I’m doing a gig on Aug 1st in Berkeley at Afikomen with some local talent.

Also, I finally uploaded a bunch of vids from the Tmol Shilshom gig I did over a year ago, in Israel with awesome JC Jones, Harold Rubin and Haim Peskoff. Most of the vids are linked to, here on the Poetry page.

RIP Tuli Kupferberg

When someone passes on to the better world, Jews say: “Baruch Dayan Haemet” – “Blessed be the True Judge”. Can’t think of anything less appropriate to say on the news of Tuli Kupferberg’s death. This wild anarchist poet-musician-madman questioned everything there’s to question in social/mythic/historic lore. There’s a beautiful obituary here at the Forward, and this is a piece I wrote on him a short while back. And I can’t help but embed this tune here –

Interview/Herring

May 26, 2010 1 comment

Was recently interviewed by a Jewish mag out of Minnesota – http://tcjewfolk.com/poet-with-chutzpah-jake-marmer/. For some reason they dubbed Jewish slam poets as “poet with chutzpah”. Kinda don’t like chutzpah. As vocalized in the interview…

On a separate note, MJL published my piece on herring. ha! The funniest thing about it: a man named Herb emailed me – he googled “shmaltz herring”, found the article, and saw that I mentioned my great-grandmother being from the shtetl called Haschevato. His family is too, from there, going way back. He’s looking for relatives – the Nudelman family. If you happen to be a Nudelman hit me up, I’ll introduce you to Herb.

On Monday April 26th, in the same arty basement, distguished and much loved titans of poetry, Samuel Menashe and Stanley Moss will give a reading. I’ll lead a panel afterwards – on their personal Jewish poetics.
